Android Ice Cream Sandwich Coming To Raspberry Pi!

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 The Raspberry Pi website has revealed an exciting update- Android 4.0 is coming! This is a great news for Linux fans with sweet tooth! According to the website, hardware-accelerated graphics and videos have been up and running smoothly for some time; AudioFlinger support is the only major missing piece at the moment.

Ice Cream Sandwich is definitely the flavour of this summer! If this mini buddy brings in Android 4.0 compatibility successfully to its innards, then this will definitely end up being a monster Pi. The website further reads, “This implementation uses a different kernel and VideoCore binary image from the one available on GitHub, which is why we’ve been keeping quiet about it so far. We’re investigating the feasibility of converging the two code lines to produce a single common platform as soon as we can, at which point we hope to release the sources for you to play with.”

The $25 or Rs 2350 Raspberry Pi is an ARM GNU Linux box or a mini computer built on a single board. Powered by an ARM processor on a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, it has a 700 MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM and Video 4 GPU that allows the device to handle full HD video playback and even 40 Mbps Blu-ray streams with ease. One of the two models has an Ethernet port and two USB ports, that will enable users to connect external drives.

Android mini computers are slowing catching pace with several models hovering in the price range of $50 to $80. But, the Raspberry Pi is the most pocket friendly power packed device. About 4,000 Raspberry Pis are being made every day, and one can buy it from RS Components or element14/ Premier Farnell.
