LG sent invitations to the press Tuesday afternoon telling them to "save the date" for an event in New York City on May 1.
The invitation didn't specify an exact time or place, or what would
be on the agenda — only that the event was to "share the genius" and it
would "capture the spotlight in true brilliance." More details were
promised at a later time.
The event is likely for LG's U.S. launch of the Optimus G Pro smartphone, which had its official debut in February after first appearing on a Japanese carrier website in January. Mashable's Stan Schroeder scored some hands-on time
with the phone while we were at Mobile World Congress, and he said the
screen was "gorgeous" and the phone's build felt like a "bigger,
improved" Samsung Galaxy S III.
The Optimus G Pro is an Android phone with a large 5.5-inch full HD
screen (making it about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Note II),
and it's powered by 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor. There's also
a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage.
The invitation is also indicative of the growing trend of tech
companies holding their own marquee events, as opposed to launching
major products at trade shows or via press release.
