Intel Core i5 Powers PaperTab, A Paper-Thin Tablet (Video)

Intel, Plastic Logic and Queen's University work together to revolutionise the way people work with tablets and computers!

Wednesday, January 09, 2013 Researchers at Intel, Plastic Logic and a Canadian college have come up with a tablet called 'PaperTab' that is as thin as a piece of paper. It can be used either like a tablet or an e-book, with users just bending the paper-thin, flexible plastic screen to change the display. The device was recently shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), featuring a fully interactive 27.2-cm (10.7") plastic touchscreen display.

The tablet is powered by a second-gen Intel Core i5 processor. Its designers claim that the device aims to replace the need for paper. "Plastic Logic's flexible plastic displays are completely transformational in terms of product interaction," Ryan Brotman, research scientist at Intel said. "They allow a natural human interaction with electronic paper, being lighter, thinner and more robust compared with today's standard glass-based displays."

"Using several Papertabs makes it much easier to work with multiple documents," said Roel Vertegaal, the director of Queen's University's Human Media Lab.

"Within five to 10 years, most computers, from notebooks to tablets, will look and feel just like these sheets of printed colour paper," Vertegaal added.

The prototype does not feature several apps or windows on a single display. Instead, it provides users with 10 or more interactive displays (or paper tabs), one for every app in use.
