Anonymous takes on Israeli websites, wipes Jerusalem bank
8:17:00 AM
valgeo
Anonymous has launched a hacking campaign against a number of Israeli sites in protest of attacks taking place on Gaza.
The hacking spree, dubbed OpIsrael, has resulted in so many Israeli websites being defaced or shut down through methods including denial of service (DoS) attacks, that it's hard to keep count. However, some enterprising hacktivists have begun compiling lists of affected websites. Targets have included governmental, retail, and businesses -- some belonging to the automotive and fashion industries.
The bank of Jerusalem, one of Israel's largest financial institutions, has received particular attention from the hacktivists -- as the cyberattackers crowed over their achievement in deleting the organisation's online database through social network Twitter. Trying to access the bank's website resulted in nothing more than a database error.
Update 22.56 GMT: The Jerusalem bank's database has been restored -- at least for now.
Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs website also appears to have been attacked and its database either deleted or tampered with.
According to the latest list, 663 sites have been affected.
In an earlier blog post, the collective claimed that 127 Israeli sites were defaced in one of the first waves -- and the number keeps rising.
Some of the file dumps contain the full names, email addresses and passwords (123456 a frequent occupier of that row, no surprise there) of website users, stolen from breached databases.
A press release from Anonymous says that when the government of Israel publicly threatened to sever all Internet and other telecommunications into and out of Gaza, "they crossed a line in the sand." The statement continues:
"As the former dictator of Egypt Mubarack [sic] learned the hard way -- we are ANONYMOUS and NO ONE shuts down the Internet on our watch."
Anonymous finished with a stark warning to government if it persists in trying to cut telecom and web links. In addition, the collective said that unless attacks cease, the Israeli government "will know the full and unbridled wrath of Anonymous. And like all the other evil governments that have faced our rage, you will NOT survive it unscathed."
In a move that separates OpIsrael from many other campaigns, the hacktivists have put together a downloadable "care package" for residents of Gaza in the scenario that the Israeli government's promises come true and Internet connections are severed. It contains useful information on evading IDF surveillance as well as basic first aid data. In addition, Anonymous wants to make clear that it is not a "terrorist organisation", by stating that the hacker's mission is to "protect the rights of Palestinian people who are threatened with silence. [...] We know what happens to victims of oppression when the lights go dark."
As the BBC notes, while Anonymous enjoys its hacking spree, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has begun a campaign of its own -- a game called IDF Ranks which rewards frequent visitors and to its blog and content sharers with different badges and virtual military ranks. The website says this is to fight "misinformation" concerning the IDF and Israel. On Wednesday, the website began a live link documenting the attacks on Gaza.
As the hacking spree goes into full swing, this piece will be updated with further news.

iPhone 5 battery case options for extended life
12:14:00 PM
Unknown
If we traveled back to the middle of last month we’d be right to ask where the Apple iPhone 5 battery cases are, although since that time a number of options have reached market and are now being offered to consumers. Certain brands are more desirable than others and this is thanks to trust being built after the iPhone 4S battery cases some users purchased, so you can understand why some people would want to wait for the likes of Mophie to offer an iPhone 5 battery case, which at the time of writing is not yet available.
The image below does show one option that is currently being promoted by Mophie, and with the tagline “take charge of your new iPhone 5“, Mophie then direct you to a page on their website that offers some portable batteries and asks if you want to be notified when their juice pack cases are available, so you can count on a Mophie iPhone 5 battery case coming soon. If you can’t wait and need more iPhone 5 battery life, then opt for a portable battery, although we do recommended waiting considering we can’t be long away from a battery case for the iPhone 5.

Apple iPhone 5 battery case options available right now – if you want a case now and find the iPhone 5 battery life not up to scratch, or draining faster than you’d like, then you can certainly find a few options from lesser known brands being offered on certain stores. The image below shows a iPhone 5 battery case and stand from Mobile Fun, and while it might not contain the brand recognition as Mophie, we can’t help but be impressed by the usefulness of its design. This UK store state that the case offers an extra 3000mAh battery, which will certainly bump up the hours before your iPhone 5 dies and the adjustable stand makes viewing certain videos, photos, and other media that much easier. You can read the full specs on the product page here.

If you want to look at some other options then see the Meridian iPhone 5 extended battery case, although it won’t ship until next month, and the uNu ECOPAK battery for iPhone 5 with a detachable Snap-on case. Something more innovative can be seen in this article that features a Kickstarter project that has already won enough backers, and this so-called iPhone 5 iExpander will deliver 2x the battery life with expandable SD memory as well. We can see that production is due to start on Nov 26.
Are you looking for an iPhone 5 battery case, and if so why do you feel the need for more battery life? It is worth noting that some 4S owners have been reporting extremely bad battery life after installing iOS 6, so this is certainly one reason to desire a battery case although the problem can be solved by software rather than hardware.

Black Ops 2 zombies jet gun with foursome glitch
11:11:00 AM
Unknown
We’re back with some more exciting Black Ops 2 zombies information for you. After keeping you in the loop regarding Pack a Punch weapon upgrades and a fully solved video guide to the Black Ops 2 Tower of Babble Easter Egg achievement, we now have a secret to share with you with regards to the new jet gun wonder weapon that is available in the game.
If you have been playing zombies continuously since release day, you will have probably already located the jet gun already, by finding numerous parts scattered around Green Run on Tranzit. It is not entirely difficult to do, and the pieces can all be brought to the work bench once you’re done to fully assemble the Jet Gun, or the Thrustodyne Aeronautics Model 23 as its known by its real name.
It turns out that there is actually a way to obtain FOUR jet guns, so that you and each of your three team mates can have one as well. Obviously, we doubt very much that Treyarch intended to let gamers have four jet guns, as it specifically states in the game after you pick it up that you already own it and there can be only one jet gun.
An apparent glitch has been discovered by NextGenZombies though, allowing you to swap out out the jet gun for the turbine with teammates and then go and grab another jet gun for yourself at the table. Simply repeat this step another two times and you should end up with a result where all four players can obtain the jet gun!

Doing so will then stack the odds in your favor against the zombies, but be careful not to overuse the jet gun throttle too much as it will break easily and you have to reassemble all of the parts before you can use it again – not an ideal situation to be in when you are in the middle of Wave 20 with tons of zombies running towards you.
As far as we’re aware, this is available to try on all versions of the game. There has been a recent Black Ops 2 PS3 patch to update to version 1.03 though, so we’re not sure if Treyarch has fixed this glitch or not – let us know in the comments if they have blocked it.
So there we have it, all four players having access to the jet gun. Have fun trying it out and let us know if it worked for you.

New malware variant recognizes Windows 8, uses Google Docs as a proxy to phone home
11:04:00 AM
Unknown
Windows 8 may block most malware
out of the box, but there is still malware out there that thwarts
Microsoft’s latest and greatest. A new Trojan variant, detected as Backdoor.Makadocs and spread via RTF and Microsoft Word document marked as Trojan.Dropper,
has been discovered that not only adds a clause to target Windows 8 and
Windows Server 2012, but also uses Google Docs as a proxy server to
phone home to its Command & Control (C&C) server.
Symantec believes the threat has been updated by the malware author to include the Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 references, but doesn’t do anything specific for them (yet). This is no surprise: the two operating systems were released less than a month ago but of course they are already popular, and cybercriminals are acting fast.
Yet the more interesting part is the Google Docs addition. Backdoor.Makadocs gathers information from the compromised computer (such as host name and OS type) and then receives and executes commands from a C&C server to do further damage.
In order to do so, the malware authors have decided to leverage Google Docs to ensure crystal clear communications. As Google Docs becomes more and more popular, and as businesses continue to accept it and allow the service through their firewalls, this method is a clever move.
The reason this works is because Google Docs includes a “viewer” function that retrieves resources of another URL and displays it, allowing the user to view a variety of file types in the browser. In violation of Google’s policies, Backdoor.Makadocs uses this function to access its C&C server, likely in the hopes of preventing the link to the C&C from being discovered since Google Docs encrypts its connection over HTTPS.
Symantec says “It is possible for Google to prevent this connection by using a firewall.” Since the document does not leverage vulnerabilities to function (it relies on social engineering tactics instead) it’s unlikely Google will be able to do much beyond participating in a game of cat and mouse with the malware authors.
Nevertheless, we have contacted Google and Microsoft about this issue. We will update this article if and when we hear back.
Update at 4:30PM EST: “Using any Google product to conduct this kind of activity is a violation of our product policies,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “We investigate and take action when we become aware of abuse.”

Black Ops 2 1.03 live on PS3, patch notes on way
11:00:00 AM
Unknown
We have been reporting the Black Ops 2 problems we’ve experienced during our review on the PS3 and also those of our readers, which has now led to patch 1.03 going live and should be available for you to download right now. Around 2 hours ago the Game Design Director at Treyarch stated that Black Ops 2 patch 1.03 had been prepped and should be rolling out soon, although within the last 30 minutes we’ve seen the update go live in the UK and US for PS3 users.
The file size is just 58MB and came shortly after the message of the day, which explained they’ve been able to quickly identify issues with Black Ops 2 after listening to gamer feedback. This means certain server problems have been fixed, and they also touched on the fact that a patch would be rolling out to correct “game-side issues“. You can see the message of the day below, although it seems a few issues have already been reported in regard to Black Ops 2 patch 1.03, but some of these might be minor teething problems.

Expect some problems to fix themselves – the latest tweets from David Vonderhaar, Treyarch, explained that some issues found after installing Black Ops 2 update 1.03 will “self correct” and this includes certain messages stating, “Game versions are incompatible“. He explained that with over one million people online grabbing the latest patch it would cause a few teething problems, so his recommendation is to “hang tight“.
It is also true that Black Ops 2 patch 1.03 won’t fix all problems, although Vonderhaar points out that there are “some good fixes” for the most common problems reported over the last couple of days. They are going to fix more issues shortly and this will mean Black Ops 2 should receive patch 1.04 in the coming week or two, but the biggest question PS3 gamers have is on the matter of freezing and crashing, which we touched on before. We are yet to hear if the majority of freezing problems are fixed for PS3 gamers, but we’ll know more when the full patch notes go live. Earlier today we mentioned that the Double XP weekend had started, although a number of our readers are still pointing to many issues after the latest patch and initially a few had a problem seeing Double XP start.
Have you installed Black Ops 2 patch 1.03 on your PS3, and if so have you noticed any changes? When the full release notes arrive for this update we will post them here, so feel free to check back soon. Let’s just hope at least the crashing/freezing stops, and the connections to friends and family improve while playing zombies and multiplayer online.

GTA V trailer graphics clarified by Rockstar
10:56:00 AM
Unknown
It’s fair to say that most of the gaming world has already seen the amazing new GTA V trailer 2 that Rockstar released earlier this week. If you did, you would have seen some of the most dazzling graphics on view, current-gen console graphics we may add not next-gen as explained in our last GTA 5 insight.
The graphics that can be seen in the video are impressive to say the least and for those unassuming gamers who are unaware of Rockstar’s trailer format, they have been asking the developer if these are real in-game graphics that we are seeing, or rendered cutscenes – basically because they look so good.
If you are a hardcore GTA fan, you’ll probably know that all of the graphics and visuals featured inside Rockstar’s GTA trailers are in-game graphics and developed using the game running in real-time. To set the record straight though, Rockstar has moved to clarify this on the official PlayStation Blog, when answering some user comments.

We went through a few months of silence from the developer, but it’s great to see that now the trailer is out, the developer is now starting to engage in community chatter at last, taking to their official website and other sources to answer some of the most requested queries from fans. Above is the response that Rockstar recently gave when asked specifically about the quality of graphics featured in the GTA 5 trailer 2.
If you pause at 0:38 in the trailer below, just take a look at the breathtaking graphics on offer as the train pulls into a busy downtown Los Santos, with a public bus also in view and general pedestrians going about their daily business – all in realtime. Another clip where Michael is abseiling down an office block is pretty mind-blowing too and amazing to think that the player will be able to do this themselves without the aid of cutscenes.

What about the train jump at the end then with Trevor – that is in-game graphics we presume as well then going by Rockstar’s statement? It will be interesting to see whether this still ends up as a cutscene of some sort, or whether players will be in control of the jump as well.
Take one more look at the trailer 2 below and the awesome Skeletons Stevie Wonder theme and tell us if you can believe that these are all in-game graphics on show. Does Rockstar have a masterpiece on their hands that is going to destroy Black Ops 2′s $500 million 24 hour sales record? We think it might.

Top 10 Secret Features in Windows 8
10:53:00 AM
Unknown
Windows 8 is full of awesome features and handy shortcuts, but what you may not know is that it's got a lot of handy, lesser-known settings under the hood. Here are 10 of Windows 8's best kept secrets.
10. Run Automatic Maintenance on a Schedule
Windows
8 has a new feature that runs automatic maintenance tasks like software
updates, security scanning, and other diagnostic tests daily. By
default, it runs them at 3AM, of if you're using your computer, the next
time your computer becomes idle. You can change this time in the Action
Center, as well as tell Windows whether you want to wake your computer
up to perform these tasks. You can also perform the maintenance manually
from the Action Center, if you desire.9. Customize the Apps in the Search Bar
When you start searching from the Start screen, you'll see a list of apps under the search bar. Click on one of them, and you'll search those same terms in that specific app. What you may not know is that you can tweak this list, removing and adding apps through Windows 8's settings. Bring up the Charms bar (with Win+C), click Settings, and go down to "Change PC Settings." From there, choose Search from the left sidebar, and turn off the apps you don't want taking up space in this menu.8. Enable the Hidden "Aero Lite" Theme
When
Windows 8 was in the testing phases, it had an additional "Aero Lite"
theme that took away some of the transparent glass features of Windows
Aero. However, the final version of Windows 8 opted for a much more
basic theme than the testing builds, so Aero Lite no longer shows
up—however, you can still find it in the Themes folder on your computer.
With a few small tweaks, you can re-enable it in your Personalization preferences. It isn't too
different from the default themes, but it does give a slightly
different look to the title button bars and some other small parts of
the OS.7. Enable the Secret Start Screen Animation
When
you first sign onto Windows 8, you get a very cool flow-y animation of
all your tiles filling up the screen. After that, though, the Start
screen has a much more toned-down animation. If you want to enable the
cooler animation for every launch of the Start screen, you can do so with a simple Registry tweak. You can also customize certain settings for the animation too, which is pretty cool.6. Customize More Icons in Windows Explorer
5. Create and Name App Groups on the Start Screen
When you first open up the Start screen, you'll notice that some of your apps are in their own "groups." You can create your own groups just by dragging an app's tile to an empty space on the Start screen—it'll create its own group. If you want to name your groups—say, for "Work," "Games," and so on—you can do so by clicking the small button in the bottom-right corner of the screen and right-clicking on the groups.4. Take Faster Screenshots
For a long time, Windows had an absurd screenshot shortcut in which you had to press Print Screen, then open up an app like Paint or the GIMP and paste in your screenshot from the clipboard. Well, no more! Now, if you press Win+Print Screen (or Win+Volume Down on a tablet), Windows will take a screenshot of your screen and automatically save it in your Pictures folder as a PNG file. It still isn't as powerful as something like Skitch, but if you only need the occasional screenshot, it's nice to see a simpler shortcut built in to the OS.3. Tweak the Number of Rows on the Start Screen
By
default, the Start screen fills your monitor up with as many rows of
tiles as it can fit, up to 6 rows. If you'd like to lower that
number—maybe you have a particularly cool background, or your groups
just aren't that big—you can tweak this number by editing the Registry. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to let you pack more tiles onto smaller monitors, but it's a cool little tweak if you want to give your Start screen a more minimal look.2. Hide Recent Files from Your Jump Lists
Jump Lists were a great addition in Windows 7 that helped boost your productivity, but their "Recent Items" feature were a possible privacy concern—say, if there were documents or files you didn't want others to know you had viewed. Windows 8 lets you customize Jump Lists more than Windows 7, giving you the option to hide recently opened items and recently opened programs. To access the preferences, just right-click on the Taskbar, go to Properties, and click the Jump Lists tab.1. Get More Out of Your Multiple Monitors
If you have multiple monitors, you've probably noticed that Windows extends your taskbar across both screens. It does more than just that, though: you can press Win+PgUp to move your current app to your left monitor, and Win+PgDn to move it to the right monitor. In addition, if you go to the Desktop Background section of your Personalization settings, you can right-click on any individual wallpapers and choose which monitor you'd like it to show up on. Of course, if you like things the old way, you can also turn off the dual taskbar in Taskbar Properties.Source: lifehacker.com

Black Ops 2 Double XP starts, PS3 issues persist
5:11:00 PM
Unknown
We admire those gamers that are battling it out on Black Ops 2 while experiencing constant freezing with the PS3 version, although we’ve noticed our PS3 Slim version seems to be crashing and having more problems than the Super Slim PS3, which might be pure luck considering both consoles have patch 1.02 installed. We touched on the Black Ops 2 PS3 problems a few days ago and this met over 250 comments from our readers, which the majority of these gamers confirmed the issues and also expanded on their situation with more detail.
This article also featured a tweet from Activision that confirmed they were aware of connection issues, although it didn’t really look at the larger problems like PS3′s freezing and shutting down automatically when playing Black Ops 2 online. Since this update from Activision we’ve seen numerous tweets from gamers but little feedback from those behind Black Ops 2, although earlier today we saw Activision tweet about the Black Ops 2 Double XP launch weekend and touch on people needing “patience” while they “resolve” the PS3 problems and those issues with other platforms as well. You can see a screenshot of this tweet below, which asked for gamers to be patient.

We also saw a video published within the last 24 hours that talks about getting started with Black Ops 2 Double XP, and offers a survival guide for this weekend. You can see that video here on YouTube, which runs for just over a minute, but it is worth noting that some PS3 owners are annoyed thanks to still having problems getting online with Black Ops 2. They hope that a second Double XP weekend is offered as soon as the problems are fixed.
How has your Black Ops 2 Double XP weekend been so far, has it been all fun or are you still having problems? We published details of the Black Ops 2 diamond guns and camos earlier today, so feel free to see how to unlock these in a video via our earlier article.

Black Ops 2 diamond guns and camos visualized
5:04:00 PM
Unknown
How are you getting on with Black Ops 2 multiplayer at the moment? If you thought that Black Ops 2 gold guns were the best thing to aim at in multiplayer mode, think again. Treyarch has planted secret Black Ops 2 diamond weapons and diamond camos as well, and we have a great video to show you, letting you see the bling bling goodies for yourself.
Gold guns in the first Black Ops game took long enough to unlock as it is, so we have no idea how this person has managed to play through the entire prestiges of Black Ops 2 and unlock the hidden diamond gear. In order to get the diamond weapons and camos, you have to complete every single camo unlock for all Specials in the game.
We can tell you that there is going to a diamond crossbow, diamond assault shield, diamond ballistic knife and also a diamond combat knife to use. It transforms your golden special weapons into diamond, giving each one of them a makeover complete with shining jewels that are going to make you one hot target indeed in multiplayer mode and the envy of many other players we expect.

The user in question, Vikkstar, is claiming that he is the first person in the world to unlock the diamond weapons and camos for Black Ops 2. If that is indeed true, then surely he must be in with a shot of snagging some prizes from Treyarch perhaps – quite a achievement you have to say considering that Black Ops 2 has only been out for a matter of days, officially anyway.
Each weapon has their own diamond characteristics and we have to say that the diamond ballistic knife looks particularly awesome. Imagine taking someone out with one of those and then the player having to watch it back on the killcam – need we say more? We’ve included the video below which shows you how to get the diamond weapons and camos, and how they look in a private match online.
Are you going to aim for the diamond gear now or do you think they are out of your reach? Is this guy really the first in the world to have unlocked them, or have you already seen someone using the diamond goodies online? Don’t forget to check out the Tower of Babble easter egg secret, which has now been solved.
