Samsung’s mobile devices may be reeling from the company’s landmark loss
in the patent-infringement case brought by Apple, but that’s not
stopping it from charging full speed ahead in the PC space. The Korean
electronics giant just unveiled a suite of new all-in-one desktop computers, tailored for Windows 8.
The big giveaway that these machines are made for Windows 8 is their touchscreens. Samsung
unveiled three new all-in-ones — with screens measuring 27, 23 and 21.5
inches — and they all have capacitive touchscreens that support
10-finger touch, as required for Windows 8.
Samsung says it prioritized design in the new line, borrowing the same kind of modern-looking stands you may have seen on the company’s new TVs.
They also come with remote controls, and include simple gesture
controls as well. No voice control yet, but Samsung says it’s working on
it (though maybe not for this generation).
The new machines also include an interesting variation on Windows 8,
something called the S Launcher. If you feel a tad frightened that
Windows 8 throws out the old Windows Start menu, Samsung’s bringing it
back. On your Windows 8 desktop, the S Launcher resides right in the
middle, so searching your computer for programs and settings is once
again just one click away.

The trio falls under two labels: Series 7 and Series 5. The top of
the line is obviously the Series 7, a 27-inch beast loaded with an Intel
Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard disk for storage and discrete
AMD Radeon HD 7850M graphics ($1,699). There’s also a 23-inch version
of the Series 7, which packs a Core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM and 1TB of
storage, but with integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics ($1,099).
The Series 5 has just one model, a 21.5-inch machine with a Core i3
processor, 4B of RAM, a 500GB hard disk and the same integrated Intel
graphics as the smaller Series 7 ($749).
Across the line, the screens are all full HD 1,920 x 1,080 displays.
Each model has five USB ports — two 3.0 and three 2.0 — an HDMI input
and output and a three-in-one media card slot. Optical drives and
Bluetooth 4.0 come standard. All will be available the same day Windows 8
launches, Oct. 26.
