Firefox For Android Now Compatible With More Phones

Firefox for Android now supports ARMv6 architecture along with ARMv7 architecture. More users can now access Firefox for Android. This is an important step towards making the open Web free to all.

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 Mozilla has now included support for more Android phones for its Firefox for Android. Now, handsets like HTC Status, HTC ChaCha, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Motorola Fire XT and LG Optimus Q among many more will support Firefox for Android. According to an official posting, “To date, Firefox for Android has supported phones running Android versions 2.2 and higher, but only on phones equipped with ARMv7 processors. Now, Firefox for Android supports a number of phones using ARMv6 processors."

Mozilla has announced that roughly half of the nearly 500 million Android phones in use today run on ARMv6 architecture, so, with the inclusion of ARMv6 architecture support, more users can access Firefox for Android. This is an important step towards making the open Web free to all.

Firefox for Android brings in new accessibility features to help visually impaired have a better browsing experience. Firefox for Android operates smoothly with TalkBack, the Android screen reader. There is no need for additional configuration or installations.

Firefox also supports advanced accessibility features recently introduced to Android, including Explore by Touch and Gesture Navigation. Explore by Touch is an Android feature that makes it easier for the visually impaired to browse the Web using speech output, sounds and vibrations.

Earlier, we reported that Mozilla has introduced a preview version of its integrated Firefox Marketplace in Firefox for Android. According to Mozilla, the first Aurora release of Firefox Marketplace is available to early adopters and testers who are using Firefox for Android Aurora. This release gives developers means to get feedback on their apps as the Marketplace grows and progresses. “We develop in the open and this initial release will help lead the way for future Marketplace Aurora, Beta and Firefox OS releases in 2013,” according to an official posting.
