iPhone 5S upgrades with Touch On, Gorilla Glass 3 (Video)

While Android fans are naturally ecstatic about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 release, iPhone owners have yet another upgrade to look forward to with the seemingly inevitable release of the iPhone 5S. Considering that the 3GS and 4S came before, Apple should release their enhanced iPhone 5 later on in the year and now we have some particularly exciting details on possible plans to make the iPhone 5S display screen one of the most superior on the market in 2013.

If you have an iPhone 5, you may have noticed a slight decrease in touch screen sensitivity compared to older iPhone devices. Apple uses in-cell technology at the moment, but new reports surfacing from China suggests that Apple are going to switch to a new technology called Touch On to combat iPhone 5 touchscreen interference that has been causing some users problems.

While this problem won’t be highlighted or be a hassle to the average iPhone 5 consumer, one video that we have to show you below gives you an exact idea at the touchscreen sensitivity differences between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. Watch how the iPhone 4S has no problem with rapid diagonal swipes across the touchscreen, but when the same method is applied on the iPhone 5 – the device stutters at times and in some cases, stops input altogether briefly.

With this hardware issue in mind, it’s no surprise to see Apple wasting no time in ensuring that the problem isn’t repeated with their next iPhone. This report from China suggests that Touch On technology will be used, offering a display which is thin and durable, but more importantly will provide users with ‘better touch sense capabilities’ – which we’re guessing will involve a different setup where the touch sensor and display won’t interfere with one another as seen in the current iPhone 5.

Elsewhere in the display specs department, we’re also hearing that Corning will equip Gorilla Glass 3 materials on the iPhone 5S as well, new technology which will apparently be three times more scratch resistant than the previous version of Gorilla Glass, as noted by Apple Insider. By using Native Damage Resistance technology, Gorilla Glass 3 will apparently also make 40 percent of scratches that do occur, naked to the user’s eye.

Gorilla Glass 3 will be a very welcome upgrade amongst iPhone enthusiasts we expect, but the more important factor in all of this is to see if this Touch On tech can really eliminate the iPhone 5 diagonal touch input problems. Hopefully we’ll have some further information on this as well as some other potential upgrades for the next iPhone.
