NRA Launches Shooting App for iOS

The NRA releases its own shooting game, despite its executive's comments against violent videogames.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) recently launched NRA: Practice Range, a MEDL MOBILE-developed iOS game simulating the practice range experience.

The App Store's description for the app calls it "the NRA's new mobile nerve center, delivering one-touch access to the NRA network of news, laws, facts, knowledge, safety tips, educational materials and online resources." To be fair, the app does offer all of the information as detailed above and gun safety tips are splashed on loading screens for the gun range. However, the obvious focus of the app is for the game, as everything included under "NRA Info" links to the NRA website and is not located in the app itself.

For the game itself, users have the ability to choose between the indoor range, the outdoor range, or skeet shoot. Users then use the phone's accelerometer to aim and shoot at the designated targets.

After the Sandy Hook shooting, the NRA came under heavy fire for advocating gun rights. NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre decided to deflect some of the blame onto violent videogames, stating, "There exists in this country, sadly, a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people," and pointed to games such as Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, and Mortal Kombat as examples.

LaPierre's comments seem just a little ironic now that the NRA's released a shooting game of its own.
