Samsung Galaxy S2 Android 4.1.2 update with Note 2 UI

We informed you at the start of January that Samsung had confirmed a surprise Android 4.1.2 update for the now old Galaxy S2 handset. After no information for two weeks, many of you had started to fear that the update would fall victim to Samsung’s infamous delay tactics, but thankfully that isn’t the case. We’ve now got confirmation that the Jelly Bean update has started to rollout in phases, for the International GT-I9100 version of the device.

We also told you at the time that the update would be available via the Samsung Kies software only, but new reports are suggesting that the update is also available OTA as well, which is great. As mentioned above though, the phased rollout means that not everyone will have the update yet and it will also depend on where you live and what carrier you are on.

As for the update itself, we’re hearing that it is a very sizable update for the S2 indeed, with consumers being able to enjoy a brand new interface, a UI which is currently featured on the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 Mini all running the latest versions of Android.

For a device that released almost three years ago, this is a very positive outcome indeed to think that users are still getting official support and features that are in line with handsets that are available to buy on the market now. It’s a great sign for the future that any handsets bought in 2013 like the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 for example, may receive official software updates from Samsung right up to 2016.

SamMobile has provided a detailed list of some of the other features that are coming in the Android 4.1.2 update. The UI revamp is the big deal for us though. If you are the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9100, let us know if you have received any notifications to update yet, or if you have pushed the update manually via Kies or device settings.
