Samsung Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update revives phone

We have some fantastic news for those of you who have resisted temptation all of last year and stuck with the Samsung Galaxy S2 in favor of newer handsets with more luxurious hardware specs. Samsung has decided to reward that patience by upgrading the Galaxy S2 with an official helping of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The Galaxy S2 is now arguably outdated having been released in May 2011, and it is very pleasing to see the device still part of the official Jelly Bean update rollout, with some users having probably expected to stay on Ice Cream Sandwich forever.

The update is definitely on the way, but as we’ve known with Samsung updates in the past, actually reaching your handset will be a different story altogether since updates are always handled on a region to region basis. Unsurprisingly, Korea will be first to the party, as Samsung has confirmed this with an official document in Korean – nothing set in stone for US and Europe Galaxy S2 users yet, but it’s safe to assume that the update will be happening after the initial rollout in Korea.

A few word of warnings about the update though, as we’re hearing that the only way to install Jelly Bean will be via Kies – so it’s probably a good idea to install the software now if you previously have been reluctant. The other issue is that the actual size of the update will be a rather hefty one – weighing in at 1GB to be precise so start freeing up system space if you are currently maxing out your storage.

Apart from that, the update is very straight forward and will add the same features, plus more that have been seen on other Galaxy handsets that have had the update already. Google Now is one of the most obvious new additions, improved scrolling is also included, while a whole host of new Google services will also be added once you have rebooted the device after installation – Google Play movies is definitely a nice surprise waiting once you’ve installed Jelly Bean.

Considering that the Galaxy S2 is getting the latest version of Android despite releasing over a year and a half ago, it is a good prospect for Galaxy S3 owners who are curious to find out when their official support will end. Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is surely now a certainty for the Galaxy S3, while it may even get Android 6.0 as well based on Samsung’s actions with the Galaxy S2.
