Mozilla Intros Two Snapdragon Powered Firefox Phones

Check out Mozilla's Firefox operating system based Keon and Peak smartphones running on Snapdragon processors.

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 Mozilla has announced that the first Firefox OS smartphone will be released in February. The company has announced that Spanish manufacturer, Geeksphone along with carrier Telefónica is developing two developer smartphones with Firefox operating system pre-installed in it. Geeksphone has dubbed the two smartphone as Keon and Peak. The Keon sports a 8.8-cm (3.5-inch) HVGA screen and is based on a single core Snapdragon S1 processor clocked at 1 GHz along with 512MB of RAM and 4GB on board storage. Other features include 3 megapixel rear camera along with 2G and 3G connectivity.

On the other hand, the Peak packs in a dual core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz and sports a 10.9-cm (4.3-inch) qHD screen. It is powered by 512 MB RAM and includes an 8 megapixel rear camera along with a 2 megapixel front camera and 4 GB of in-built memory.

We are expecting Mozilla will allow Telefónica and Geeksphone to showcase both the smartphones at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Also, Chinese mobile phone maker, ZTE is looking forward to launch its Firefox operating system based handsets in Europe by the end of 2013. ZTE wants to take a new course in the smartphone segment by working on Firefox smartphone after the company has made 90 per cent of its handsets on Android OS.

HTML 5 based operating system means that most of the Firefox applications would be simply websites. Also, Mozilla has plans to include a well stocked app store. Users can also look out for apps through a built-in search engine.
